Over the past year I’ve watched student-athletes go through a roller coaster of emotions when it comes to the sports they love.
My son had football on the brain, big time! All he cared about was getting bigger, stronger, and faster so that he could have a great senior football season and hopefully be recruited by one of his dream schools.
I was with him on a football recruiting trip. We had visited UCLA, USC, Utah State, and Weber State. We were sitting in the cafeteria of Southern Utah University waiting to meet with the coaches when the governor of Utah announced the “14 days to flatten the curve.”
That announcement cut our trip short and ended up having an impact on his and thousands of other kids’ athletic seasons over the next year and a half.
Including my son, I watched a lot of student-athletes deal with the frustration and disappointment of cancelled seasons, adjusted seasons, playing with masks on, and so much more.
Throughout this process I watched several student-athletes that had been obsessed with the sport they love, who had put thousands of hours into practice, lose their drive.
I had one athlete express her frustration to me. She told me that for years she has lived for basketball. She loves to play. She loves to practice. She loves everything about it. At the time it was still undetermined if or when her team would have a season. She told me that the most frustrating thing to her was that she felt as though she was being told that the sport she loved so much, just wasn’t a big deal and didn’t matter anymore.
The Truth Is…
The truth is it does matter! Yes, there is more to life than sports. We were dealing with a pandemic and a lot of unknowns. But for these athletes that their sport has been such a big part of their life, it really does matter. Their sport still matters!
I have learned so much throughout my life from the sports I played and the coaches that I’ve had that has helped shape who I am today. I learned values, respect, teamwork, goal setting, dedication, and so much more.
The last thing I want to tell one of these dedicated athletes is that the sport they love doesn’t matter.
Help My Son!
I was conducting a group coaching session with some of my business clients when one of them brought up the struggle her son was having coping with the impact that the pandemic has had on his athletic plans and goals. She told me that over the course of the past year he has become more and more depressed as his hopes of playing in college on a scholarship were looking less and less likely.
That conversation stuck with me over the next couple of days because I watched the same thing happen with my son. His love for the game never faded, but his desire to keep playing at the next level did.
The Confident Athlete Program
To be successful, athletes put a lot of time and effort into the physical aspect of their sport. The mental game is often neglected, but it’s just as important as the physical game and is often the differentiator for successful athletes.
I’ve coached basketball for over 20 years at different levels. Many of those years included coaching my oldest daughter, Tia. I had the opportunity to work with her at a young age, and I had the opportunity to be her coach all the way through to her senior year of high school.
She had a successful career, but I feel that it’s an “if I knew then what I know now” situation.
From my own sporting career, including many years as a professional rodeo athlete, I knew the importance of your mind in sports. But I didn’t get it. I didn’t understand the difference between a growth mindset and a fixed mindset. I didn’t know how to control my self-talk to help me succeed.
If I knew then what I know now, I could have been a better coach and my athletes, including Tia, could have been better athletes.
Knowing the importance of the mental game, plus knowing what these student-athletes have been through during the past year, I felt that I had an opportunity to help these athletes and created The Confident Athlete Program.
The Mental Game
Working with athletes in The Confident Athlete Program has been incredible. I am currently working with middle-school athletes up to Division One College athletes. There are even a couple professional athletes in the program.
Regardless of where you are at in your career, the mental game is important if you want to achieve your full potential.
How The Confident Athlete Program Works
The Confident Athlete Program is structures so that the athlete can work through it on their schedule, at their pace. They all have different schedules and must do what works for them.
The program consists of six modules. Each module is made up of several different training videos. I purposely kept the videos short for those athletes who couldn’t commit large blocks of time to them.
In addition to the video training, I also host a weekly group coaching call. During the call I continue with more training that is not included in the modules. I give the athletes the opportunity to ask questions and share ideas with one another.
During some of our group coaching calls I bring in special guests to speak as well. I recently had my friend, Tami Matheny, the author of The Confident Athlete book, speak to our group.
The athletes also have a private Facebook group where they can share thoughts and ideas. I also share articles and applicable podcasts in this group.
