What do you want?
It’s a simple question. What. Do. You. Want?
Do you even REALLY know what you want?
What are your goals and dreams?
Most people can tell me what they don’t want easier than they can tell me what they do want.
If you don’t know what you want, where are you going? Why are you doing what you are doing?
Or are you just trying to help someone else who knows what they want get to their destination?
I want to help you to see the importance of focus and give you some ideas that will help you to not only know what you want, but also how to get it.
Everyone has goals of some sort, whether they think they do or not. There are things that they want. Some people put more time and effort into defining what those goals are than others and some even create a plan to achieve them.
Napoleon Hill said “…any human being who can be definite in his aims and plans can make life hand over whatever is wanted.”
So, let’s assume you have set definite goals for yourself and you’ve created a plan to achieve them. Great work, good for you!
Now, if I were to spend a day, or a week, or a month with you, would I be able to figure out what your goals are by the actions you take?
Would I be able to figure out your goals just by looking at your calendar and seeing what your priorities are and where you dedicate your time?
Most people do not have a strategic plan or focus on anything specific. Their life is just a series of decisions based on reactions to what is happening around them and their perspective of the world.
Your perspective is how you see your world. It’s not right or wrong, it’s just your view of your world.
What you focus on shapes your perspective.
Your perspective drives your actions.
Your actions determine your results.
If you want to drive different results and create a bigger future for yourself, change your focus.

Your focus will determine your reality.
When you learn how to focus your energy, amazing things will happen. You get thoughts and inspiration that you didn’t have before. You notice things that you hadn’t seen before. You meet people who can help your cause and so much more.
Let’s put focus into perspective. Have you ever been to an evening football game under the lights? Those big, powerful lights illuminate the entire stadium. They might be bright to look at, but you can stare directly at them without any problems. But imagine taking all those lights and condensing them down into one single laser beam. By focusing that energy, you can create something much, much more powerful than what you had before.
When you have definite goals and give them laser focus, you can achieve them.
Tony Robbins says, “where focus goes, energy flows.” This is a powerful concept, because the difference between those who are focusing on their goals and others, is that the other people are stuck in reaction mode. Instead of creating a clear plan to help them get where they want to go, they simply deal with different situations as they arise and never really get ahead. Without focus, energy doesn’t flow directly to achieving your goals.
How to Improve Your Focus
It’s easy to talk about the need to have better focus, but unless you act it may never improve. Here are some ideas to help you with your focus:
- Mindset Questions: As part of my morning routine, I write out my goals and go through a specific set of Mindset Questions. These are questions that help me to get focused and primed for the day ahead. Click on the link and get my mindset questions for free, or develop your own that will help you start the day of right.
- Meditation: Meditation is essential. If you think you don’t have time for it, make time. Meditation doesn’t have to be an hour of sitting with your legs crossed and your eyes closed. There are so many kinds of meditation. For people like me, there’s very little quiet time. When I’m driving or at the gym I’m listening to a podcast or book. Whenever there’s free space, I fill it. Yesterday in one of my Accountability Groups someone told me that they do their meditation while they run. This morning on my run I put in my noise cancelling buds but didn’t turn anything on. I ran in complete silence, and it was amazing! (Exercise could be an item on this list by itself. It’s a great time to develop your focus) Meditation allows you to quiet your mind and take control of your thoughts. Make time and give it a try.
- Music: When we hear music we like, our brains release dopamine. Music can help to increase our energy and focus. Your focus will determine your reality. Once you can put more and more focus towards the things that you really want in your life, you’ll see those things become a reality.
Focus on what you want and the things that matter most to you and you will attract more of it into your life.
