I recently finished going through the One Funnel Away Challenge from Russell Brunson/ClickFunnels. There were a number of things I received as part of this course, which included a book, which I’m currently reading and have to say that I love it! It’s a unique book from Russell, put together by going to his Two Comma Club members and asking them what they would do to get back on top if they lost everything. Here’s what he asked them:

I’ve really enjoyed reading through each chapter as each one is focused on the individuals expertise. Some are coaches, some sell products through e-commerce, some are affiliate marketers and the list goes on.

Today I was reading Stacey and Paul Martino’s chapter. Stacey and Paul are some incredible people and the founders of RelationshipDevelopment.org.
For the past while I have been focused on structuring and organizing our upcoming Mastermind Groups. So there was one section of their chapter that really stood out to me and I loved what Stacey wrote because it ties in so well with our Mastermind Groups.

At the end of every day I take a look at my list of things I needed to accomplish during the day. If there are any items that couldn’t be completed for some reason, I deal with them. It might be rescheduling them, delegating them or deleting them all together. I then review my list for the following day, which are items I had already scheduled along with new items that surfaced in the mean time.
The next morning, when I sit down at my desk, the first thing that I’ll do is review this list again.
In the past I’ve had days that this list seems to grow bigger and bigger, regardless of how much I check off of it each day. I’ve found myself feeling great as I’m checking off item after item, feeling like I’m being producing and getting things done. But then I’d get to the end of the day and realize there are still a lot of important items that I haven’t even looked at yet. How can this be? I’ve been working and knocking things off like crazy.
Often, this problem arises not because of the number of items on my to-do-list, but because of what the items are and which ones shouldn’t even be on my list in the first place.
One of the best exercises you can do to increase your productivity is to create your Not-To-Do-List!
Think about this, there are things you do every day that move the needle the most for you and/or your company. Maybe it’s sales, maybe it’s marketing, maybe it’s coaching your team. It’s whatever you do that creates the biggest results/revenue. These needle movers are the things you should be spending your time on.
Now look at all the things you do on a daily basis that are not creating these results. That are not the needle movers. If you are putting off the needle-mover items to work on these other things, you need to stop. Stop Now! These are not the things that need your focus and that you need to be spending your time on.
It’s hard to make changes that free up big blocks of time in our days. We have smaller moments that we need to utilize and take the best advantage of. You need to create your Not-To-Do-List to free up these moments so that you can focus on the needle-movers in your life.
Let’s do this right now! Don’t put it off, grab a pen and paper and lets get started…
What things do you spend your time on that don’t serve growth, a greater income, empowerment, your God, your family or a bigger future?
- Make a list of the non-needle-mover activities that you spend your time on.
- For each item mark it as:
- Delegate, or
Now that you’ve made this list, follow through. Maybe it’s your monthly bills that you can get online and automate the payments. Maybe it’s a daily task that you’ve felt it was just easier if you took care of it yourself. Delegate it! Maybe it’s something that just really doesn’t matter. Eliminate it!
When you clear the clutter from your to-do-list, you clear your mind. Your stress level decreases and your creativity increases.
As important as a To-Do-List can be, even more important is your Not-To-Do List!

I spent hours thinking, jotting notes down, researching but I had nothing. My company was still fairly new in our industry but we had been in operation for a while. Long enough that a lot of the start-up kinks were figured out. But now I was faced with a new problem. It was a situation I had never had to deal with before in this company or any of the other companies I had been involved in previously. But the toughest part was that I just couldn’t figure out a solution that I was happy with. Sure, I was coming up with a lot of different ideas and plans, but the more I thought about them, the more I realized they were not the answer.
One evening I was at an event that a number of other entrepreneurs there that I knew. A few of us ended up sitting at a table together and once the evening wrapped up we all stayed and spent some time talking about each others businesses, successes, failures and challenges. During our conversations I brought up the issue that I was dealing with and it just so happened that one of the ladies at the table had dealt successfully with a very similar situation in her company. After she told us what she did, we all discussed it more until we figured out the best way it would work for me.
This was when I discovered first hand, the power of a Mastermind Group.
The first time that I had heard the concept of a Mastermind Group was from Napoleon Hill. In his book, Think and Grow Rich, Hill described the Mastermind principle as, “The coordination of knowledge and effort between two or more people who work towards a definite purpose in a spirit of harmony… no two minds ever come together without thereby creating a third, invisible intangible force which may be likened to a third mind,” also known as the Mastermind.
It’s incredible what can happen when you bring people together to solve a problem or make a plan. When you combine the power of a number of different personalities, perspectives, experiences and knowledge a lot can be accomplished or discovered.
Jim Rohn once said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” Who you spend your time with influences the person that you will eventually become. This includes every area of your life from wealth, to health, to styles and more. Take a look at yourself. Who are the people you spend the most time with? Now take a look at your similarities. Interesting isn’t it? Are you spending time with the people that will help you grow and take your business to the next level?

Last week I was headed down the freeway going to Phoenix for an appointment with my wife. The freeway was very busy. All of a sudden the car in front of us hit some wood on the road and pieces flew everywhere. There was too much traffic for me to switch lanes and totally avoid it so I just did my best to miss as much of it as I could. Shortly after that we heard a pop but we didn’t know what it was, until a second later my “low tire pressure” indicator lit up on my dash. When I hit the debris on the road it made me blow a tire.
We got pulled over onto the side of the road. I’ve changed a lot of tires in my lifetime but it’s never easy with the wimpy little tools that come with your vehicle, and I was in nice clean cloths. So I wasn’t too excited about getting into it. As I was getting under the back seat of the truck to find the jack, someone walked up behind me. I turned around and there was a guy with a big gun holstered on his hip and tattoos on his arms and up his neck. Yes, those were the first things that I noticed.
Long story short, his name was Luther and he was the nicest guy. He asked if he could help. He goes back to his truck pulls out a legit floor jack and some good tools. Rather than me struggling with things for an hour, he had our tire changed in about 20 minutes. He saved us so much time, stress and dirty cloths and we were able to get back on the road to our appointment.
When he was all done I asked him what I owed him. This is the best part of the whole story. He told me that to repay him, the next time I see someone in need he wants me to pay it forward and help them out. He was an awesome guy that stopped and helped out some complete strangers and all he wanted in return was for us to do the same for someone else sometime.
Yes, there are good people out there still!

I love this time of the year. NBA Playoff Games are on almost nightly. It’s so interesting to watch how different teams, players and coaches try to use their strategies to win each game. We were watching the Utah Jazz against the Houston Rockets. James Harden gets the ball in the corner, outside the three-point line. Then one of the strangest things happened. Instead of staying between his man and the basket, his defender literally got behind him, to his side. He was almost out of bounds on both the sideline and the baseline. My wife looked at me and asked what he was doing. In all my years of coaching basketball I’ve never tried that defense before, I didn’t know what he was doing. But soon, as the Utah Jazz continued to defend Hardin this way we (and the announcers) started to figure it out. One of James Harden’s most effective moves is the step-back three point shot. He’s deadly! Utah’s strategy was to give Harden the lane to the basket and they would count of the help defense when he did that. But they were not going to allow him to have his step-back three point shot. It really was pretty crazy to watch. Utah ended up losing the series but really, their defensive strategy agains Harden was quite effective, and interesting to say the least.
The series we’ve been watching now has been the Golden State Warriors against the Houston Rockets. I’m a Warriors fan, my wife is a “Whoever is Playing Against the Warriors” fan. So we have fun watching it together. The Warriors have so much talent on their team. The one who stood out to me in the last game (Game 5) was Klay Thompson. He really hasn’t been playing well so far this series. But in this game it took him less than eight minutes to surpass his total scoring from the Game 4. “Klay Thompson is out of his slump!” were the words of the announcers. When I heard this from the announcer it made me think of a lesson I had learned from Tony Robbins which is applicable to sports, business or pretty much anything in life.
What Does It Take To Succeed (from Tony Robbins)
Tony explains that there is a pattern between (1) Potential, (2) Action, (3) Results, and (4) Belief/Certainty. They are all connected as in the diagram below and they create a never ending flow.
As Tony explains how all these are related it makes a lot of sense. But that’s not what I’m going to focus on right now. What I’m going to focus on is what we have to do to get out of a slump. As we go through this pattern, most people don’t reach their full potential because they don’t take massive action. Thus their results are not as good as they could be. Those results then form their belief or certainty, which are lower than what their true potential really is.
Fortunately it works the other way too. As individuals take massive action and produce incredible results their belief and certainty in themselves goes through the roof. Their potential is expanded, followed by more massive actions, more big results, more certainty, etc.
So what do you notice about Klay Thompson, one of the premier shooters in the NBA, when he gets in a shooting slump? He stops shooting? He only looks to pass the ball? That’s what a lot of people would do. But that’s not what the most successful people do. Whether it’s in sports, business or something else, they keep shooting!
When you’re not getting the results you want, you start to doubt yourself, you become uncertain. That’s the beginning of your downward spiral.
To get out of your “slump” you need belief or certainty. But if you’re in a slump, how do you get certainty? You get certainty and change the direction of the downward spiral by getting the results in advance. That is why, when you see an NBA playing in a shooting slump, they don’t stop shooting. They are playing at an elite level. They have been shooting thousands and thousands of shots for years and years. They’ve practiced every possible scenario they could face and they’ve made those shots in practice. When they are missing their shots, they keep shooting because they are certain they can make the next one, they’ve done it millions of times before. And when things start falling for them again, watch out!
It works the same with everything in life. As you put more time and effort into doing things you become more certain in yourself and in turn you see an improvement in your results. So the next time you are in a “slump” keep going. Build your certainty by visualizing all the success you’ve had in the past. Visualize yourself doing it. Your mind does not know the difference between something you vividly imagine emotionally and and something you actually experience if you do it enough times. Believe in yourself, create certainty!
Self-discipline was twice as accurate as IQ in predicting the students’ grade-point average
Mental health is a topic that can be hard for some people to talk about. A number of years ago I went through a time period that I had to deal with depression. To this day, there are very few people that know about that because I’ve never talked about it. There’s a stigma with it that made me feel ashamed for having to deal with a mental health issue. But that is totally the wrong attitude to have when it comes to mental health. I’ve broken bones in the past. I wasn’t ashamed to admit that I had injured myself and accept help. Mental health should be no different.
My daughter is currently serving a mission for our church in Halifax NS Canada. For about a year she has been dealing with depression and anxiety at different levels and at different times. For a girl that has such a strong personality, that is use to being in control and at the top of her game, it is tough to deal with. As an athlete she’s able to push herself past what other people thought were impossible levels to surpass. She’s always been strong, she’s always been a leader. So to have something like this beat her down almost to the point of submission was devastating.
She has had some very difficult days and weeks in the recent past. But the past couple of weeks she has had a very good attitude about dealing with it and is doing quite well. She has an incredible support system there in Halifax and literally throughout Canada and the United States. Today she did something that I thought was extremely brave for a 19 year old girl to do. On Facebook (http://facebook.com/tia.heggie) and Instagram (@tiaheggie) she posted a video acknowledging her struggles and encouraged anyone else who is dealing with anything similar to talk to someone and to seek help. She wanted to “open up about it in hopes that it would help someone.”
It’s touching to read the comments people have posted to express their love and support to her. But in addition to the love and support, many people have thanked her for talking about it and go on to express how they have or are dealing with similar mental health issues themselves.
It shouldn’t be something anyone is too ashamed to talk about. There is help, there is support. There are too many that need someone to talk to, but they refuse to open up. Help is available, accept it.

An Excerpt, with some minor edits, from a note I was sending someone hoping to help them in a tough spot. I wanted to share it here as well, just in case someone reads it that could gain something from it.
You have been searching for answers and feel that you are not getting them. I can promise you that there will be a day when you look back on this time and will be able to see blessings that you cannot see now. You will be able to see where His hand was guiding you. You will understand the Why. Why you had to go through this trial. Why it wasn’t easier. And that is how you will make a difference in the world for many, many people. There are people near you that need you now. There are people nowhere close to you now that are going to need you. Everyone is dealing with their own struggles and challenges and they need help. Most can’t be helped by someone that has the book smarts on the struggle. But the person who can make a difference, the person who can change their life, the person who can save them is the one who has been there. The one who has been in their shoes and has conquered that challenge. My friend lost a baby boy and a brother in a short period. Nobody could really help her through those difficult times that hadn’t been through something similar. But now, she can take those tragic experiences and help many others going through their own tragic times. I often recall an old Young Woman’s theme, “I can do hard things.” Every hard thing that you have pushed yourself through, whether it was in a relationship, a sport, in business or something else has prepared you for something you will go through and deal with at some point in the future. Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.” You’ve been through hard things in the past and it has strengthened you. You are going to go through hard things throughout your life and they will continue to strengthen you. Right now may be the hardest thing that you have had to deal with up to this point of your life. You can do it. You will grow from it. You are amazing. YOU are going to make a difference in the world!

Russell Brunson is a name and face I’ve seen plastered all over the internet for a long time. I’ve known a little bit about his company, ClickFunnels, but only to the degree that it’s an online marketing company.

Early in my career when I was a bank manager there were many things about my position that I enjoyed. I loved working with customers, analyzing their businesses to find the best solutions for them, and I loved coaching and mentoring my staff. Before I was in this position at the bank I had a manager who was a great coach to me. He mentored me well and taught me a lot about being a manager and a coach.
Throughout my career, coaching is one thing that I’ve continued to enjoy and today I love working with clients to help them work on their businesses, leadership and their personal lives. But whether I’m working with one of my clients, my own team or even the basketball team that I coach, there is one thing that drives me crazy.
What is it that drives me crazy?
It’s when something doesn’t work out because they didn’t do the things that I knew would work. It’s when my client, team or players don’t listen to me.
That is the reason that I’m writing this right now. Lets flip the situation around and put me in the client’s seat. Even though I’ve always loved coaching and leadership I’ve never done much in the way of writing or publishing. My coach has recently been talking to me about “finding my voice.” He wants me to start publishing on a regular basis, even if it’s only for my own benefit. He told me to write articles, blog, use Facebook Live, podcast, it didn’t matter. Just start doing something and share it somewhere.
Later when I was alone I sat down to my computer and thought about it. I understood what he was wanting and why it would benefit me. But my thought was that maybe journaling would be good enough. I would do all the writing, I just wouldn’t publish it anywhere. But then I put my coaching hat back on and thought about it some more. From a coaching perspective, I know why he wants me to do it. I also know as a coach how I would feel if I asked one of my clients to do this but they didn’t.
As a client, team member or player, if you want to grow and benefit from what your coach can do for you, you need to be all in. You need to do the things you are asked to do, even if it’s hard. Sometimes the task isn’t what you learn the most from. It’s the discipline of going through with the task that is the real teacher.
