Course Correction – How to Change Direction Without Losing Enthusiasm

Let your dreams take flight”

Every Monday on my podcast, Daily Success Strategies, I tell my listeners that they need to set their week up for success. They have to determine what they need to accomplish throughout the week so that on Friday, once they’ve achieved everything they set out to do, they can look back and know that they had a successful week. I also encourage them to make sure that what it is they are working on will help get them closer to their bigger goals.

Once they have their plans figured out and they know what they need to accomplish to make it a successful week, the next step is to plan it out. Once the goal is set, a plan of action needs to be put into place. This will include scheduling everything from their block time, to their important meetings and events, coaching, or anything else they will need to do to have a successful and productive week.

I love to hear from my listeners as they set themselves accountable and share their plans with me. I also love to hear back from them at the end of the week when they let me know if they had a successful week and achieved everything they set out to do.

This past week someone shared with me a problem that they encountered. It was actually a challenge that happens often. Being prepared for an obstacle before it happens is important because it allows you to handle it best and respond rather than react to the situation.

The Problem

“Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.”

Winston Churchill

This individual has been following me for quite a while and has implemented many of my ideas and strategies into their daily life. She told me that it has brought much more clarity, focus, and productivity into her life. She finally is feeling as though she’s on the road to achieve her dreams.

Since she started following my practice of setting up her week for success and blocking her time, her productivity has gone through the roof. She’s getting a lot more done each week and she’s marching closer and closer to her goals.

But this past week was different. Each week she’s felt as though she was building more and more momentum and things were just flowing well. So she expected this past week to be the same. She made clear and definite plans for the week and committed to making it all happen. But part way through the week she was faced with a number of completely unexpected circumstances that completely threw off her plans. It was like a domino effect and everything else just seemed to fall apart.

Not only did she not accomplish her goals for the week, she was seriously side tracked and took a big step backwards.

In retrospect, she says that it wasn’t as big of a problem as she made it out to be. But the problem was that it wasn’t in her plans. She got frustrated as her schedule and plans fell apart and she basically let everything crash around her for the remainder of the week.

Following is the analogy I shared with her to help her move forward.

Your Life is a Flight Plan

“When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it.”

Henry Ford

If you really want to find success in life, think of your journey as a flight plan.

Think about taking a trip across country in an airplane. The plane leaves at a specific time, with plans to land in a specific place at a predetermined time. However, through the course of that trip, the plane is actually off course over 90% of the time. But the pilot, technology, and avionics continually are bringing the plane back onto its course so that it will arrive at it’s destination on time.

In life, you’re the pilot. Throughout your trip you are going to face unexpected turbulence and it’s your job to get back on track.

I’m going to discuss four strategies that will help you to set off on your journey and to make the necessary adjustments when necessary so that the entire trip isn’t ruined when a problem occurs.

Set Goals – Establish Your Flight Plan

“Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.”

Tony Robbins

Whether you are looking at your plans for the day, the week, the year, or the next ten years, you need to establish your goals, or your flight plan.

Most people today put more thought and planning into their next trip to the grocery store than they do for their goals, dreams and direction they want to take their life in the future.

Establishing clear and definite goals in life is vital.

If you wanted to travel to Hawaii on vacation, how important is it for the pilot to have clear and defined goals?

Would you be ok showing up at the airport and getting on the first plane you saw, hoping that it would end up in Hawaii? What if the pilots plan was to take off, once in the air they would determine how much fuel was in the plane, and then decide which direction she would go?

You’re not going to get on that plane if neither you nor the pilot have clear and defined goals, so why don’t you do the same thing with your life?

If you don’t have clear and defined goals for your life right now, you need to take my free Momentum Series training immediately! You can find it here.

Start Working Towards Your Goals – Take Off Towards Your Destination

“Successful people are not gifted; they just work hard, then succeed on purpose.”

G. K. Nelson

Once your plans are in place, you need to take action. I’ve seen many people never achieve their dreams because of paralysis by analysis. Many never start because they don’t believe in themselves.

In order to achieve your goals, you have to be willing to start working towards them with no guarantee of success.

I recently spoke about this on my podcast, Daily Success Strategies (Episode 135: Confidence is Earned Through Courage)

Courage is often portrayed as a person feeling absolutely certain about taking action in a situation, but that isn’t courage – that’s confidence.

Confidence doesn’t come until you’ve earned it by going through courage first.

This is a reality that most entrepreneurs and high achievers face on a regular basis. You have to be willing to take action despite not feeling certain, not feeling things are right, and certainly not feeling confident.

But we know that if the plane never takes off and leaves the airport, it will never reach its final destination.

Setting a goal won’t achieve it for you. You have to start working towards it.

The more often you take courageous action and step out of your comfort zone, the more your comfort zone expands and your confidence continues to grow exponentially.

Course corrections

“If the plan doesn’t work, then change the plan, not the goal.”

It’s important to keep your focus on your clearly defined goals. But it’s also important to be flexible in how you achieve them.

Just like the pilot, you have to learn to adjust throughout your flight.

When you hit turbulence or anything unexpected that throws you off course, you need to learn from it and get back on course as quick as you can.

When things go wrong and you have to make a course correction, it’s important to keep your mind fixed on your clearly defined goal and the reason you are working towards it.

When you keep a positive mindset, you will often recognize that each obstacle will also bring with it a new opportunity. So when things seem to be going wrong, keep this thought in mind, “life is happening for me rather than to me.” When you see every obstacle as a blessing of some sort, you’ll be able to respond and get back on course much easier.

“Persistence guarantees that results are inevitable.”

Paramahansa Yogananda

No matter how many times you have to course correct, decide in advance that you will never give up. By learning, adjusting, and continuing on with hard work and determination, you will achieve your goals.

In my Inner Circle Mastermind, we are currently reading the book, Think and Grow Rich as a group. We recently studied Chapter 9: Persistence. Napoleon Hill said, “without persistence you will be defeated, even before you start. With persistence you will win.”

When you decide in advance that you are willing to course correct when things get off course, it’s easier to stay positive and motivated to continue on when you face challenges.

You are the pilot of your life. Decide on your destination, make clear and definite plans to get there, take off, and be open to making changes along the way until you reach your destination.

Success Is Not An Accident, It’s a Choice – Coaches, Get The Most Out of Your Team

Attn: Coach…

“Finally! How To develop a Winning Mindset”

From: Jeff Heggie

RE: Powerful Mindset for Athletes

High School & College Teams: Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Baseball, Softball, Soccer, Hockey, Golf, Track & Field, Rugby, etc.

Dear Coach,

If you want your team to perform consistently at a high level, make each other better, or even if you just want them to stay confident through adversity, then this is the most important letter you’ll read all year!

Here’s why…

Athletes are always faced with adversity that can challenge them both mentally and physically, but with what these kids have been through this year, it’s more important than ever to ensure they have a strong mindset on and off the court!

“…the unexpected a-ha moments were life-changing.”

“One of the most underrated factors of success is knowing how & where to find help.
True & lasting success can only happen when you have people helping you along the way… This is why finding the right mentor, community, and team is so vital. I found all three in Jeff”

Here’s how and why we can make you this promise…

My name is Jeff Heggie and I’m a Success Coach with an expertise in helping to create a Powerful Mindset in high achievers.

My experience as an entrepreneur and business leader over the past twenty years, combined with my experience and research as a business coach has given me the opportunity to learn and observe the importance of developing a powerful mindset. As important as this has been in business, over the past 20 years as a basketball coach I’ve also seen firsthand the impact it has on athletes.

This training will ensure that your team is mentally strong as they deal with the challenges 2020 has thrown at them, along with the challenges and expectations of being a student athlete, and have the mindset needed to perform their best as a team.

Here’s what Kobe Bryant said about the importance of working on your mindset:

“The mindset isn’t about seeking a result – it’s more about the process of getting to the result. It’s about the journey and the approach. It’s a way of life. I do think that it’s important, in all endeavors, to have that mentality.”

Every minute you wait is another minute that one of your potential all-stars continues to fight the demons in their head telling them to give up.

Studies show that up to 35% of Elite Athletes suffer
from a mental health crisis.

In the Mindful Athlete, George Mumford says, “the real key to high performance and tapping into flow is the ability to direct and channel these strengths and skills fully in the present moment – and that starts in your mind. The flip side of this equation is also true. No matter how strong or skillful you might be, your mind can also impede that talent from being expressed, and it often does so in insidious ways if you don’t take care of it.”

In Fact, Here’s Just The Tip of The Iceberg of What You Get…

  • You’ll discover exactly how to get the MOST out of your team while they understand the importance of ‘Deliberate Practice.’
  • You’ll understand exactly why the BEST elite athletes intentionally focus on developing a powerful mindset
  • You’ll prevent having to deal with more of the mental struggles your athletes could face.
  • You won’t have to spend your time and effort trying to convince your players that they are ‘good enough’ to play at their full potential.
  • You’ll have a team that is happier and enjoying the experience.
Studies have shown that happy and confident athletes
perform much better
“When you get in the Zone,” Kobe Bryant said, “things just slow down. Everything slows down. You have supreme confidence.”
  • When your athletes all have a Powerful Mindset and Clear Goals, imagine what they will be capable of…
  • When they have a Powerful Mindset, you can focus on your job of making your team better.
  • You’ll see the relationships on your team strengthen.

So Here’s The Bottom Line With High Achievers Mindset Secrets Academy

You’ll get the six weeks of training for your team along with other resources I’ll supply to strengthen their mindset and confidence. During those six weeks your team will get live training sessions with me every second week, where I can dive deeper into topics and how to specifically implement them with your team.

What You Don’t Know About The Difference Between A Growth Mindset & A Fixed Mindset Could Hurt You

Mindset is defined as the established set of attitudes held by someone.

Jeff Heggie Coaching - Mindset: the established set of attitudes held by someone

A lot of my recent work and research has been focused on helping people create a mindset that will allow them to achieve their goals and dreams. Using the simple definition above, that would mean that I’m helping people develop a set of attitudes that will help them achieve their goals and dreams.

There are a lot of different strategies and practices that I use to help people develop what I refer to as a Powerful Mindset. For some people, this is an easy process to follow and trust. For others, there is a lot more work involved because of doubts they have in themselves, the process, or other factors.

The intention of this article is not to go through all of the strategies and tools that we use to develop a Powerful Mindset. In this article I want to focus more on the reason this road is easier for some than it is for others.

Types of Mindset

The mindset isn’t about seeking a result – it’s more about the process of getting to the result. It’s about the journey and the approach. It’s a way of life. I do think that it’s important, in all endeavors, to have that mentality.

Kobe Bryant

When you consider the type of mindset that you have, it comes down to whether you believe that such qualities as intelligence and talent are fixed or changeable traits.

If you believe your qualities are inborn, fixed, and unchangeable, you have a fixed mindset.

Those who have a growth mindset believe that these abilities can be developed and strengthened through commitment and hard work.

Stanford psychologist, Carol Dweck, says that “having a growth mindset doesn’t mean you believe that you can become anything you want with enough education and effort. Not everyone will become the next Einstein or Mozart just because they try”. Rather, she notes that the growth mindset is about living up to one’s possible potential.

Jeff Heggie Coaching Growth Mindset Fixed Mindset Photo by Benjamin Grant on Unsplash

Fixed vs Growth Mindset

In Dweck’s book, “Mindset – The New Psychology of Success,” she says, “believing that your qualities are carved in stone – the fixed mindset – creates an urgency to prove yourself over and over.”

She continues by saying that the “growth mindset is based on the belief that your basic qualities are things you can cultivate through your efforts, your strategies, and help from others. Although people may differ in every which way – in their initial talents and aptitudes, interests, or temperaments – everyone can change and grow through application and experience.”

The Impact of Your Mindset

You can see why the different mindsets will change what you believe about being able to create a “Powerful Mindset.”

Those with a fixed mindset have the belief that “it is what it is” and things can’t change. They will often go through great effort to prove this to be so.

On the other hand, those with a growth mindset are hungry and eager to learn. They’re ready to start implementing my strategies because they believe things can change.

Changing Your Mindset

“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right.”

Henry Ford

Dweck suggests that people are capable of changing their mindsets. She says, “Mindsets are an important part of your personality, but you can change them. Just by knowing about the two mindsets, you can start thinking and reacting in new ways.”

When I’m working with someone to create a Powerful Mindset, if they currently have a fixed mindset, the first step is to interrupt their belief pattern. They need to believe they can make the change before it will happen.

We can go through all the work and implementation, but if they never believe that it will work, it won’t.

Creating a Powerful Mindset begins by creating a Growth Mindset

“In a growth mindset, challenges are exciting rather than threatening. So rather than thinking, oh, I’m going to reveal my weaknesses, you say, wow, here’s a chance to grow.”

Carol S Dweck

As a person develops a growth mindset and believes that they can make changes and implement improvements in their life through efforts, strategies, and help from others, they open up and are willing to accept that through a Powerful Mindset they can bring change and find success in whatever it is they are working towards.

Your mindset plays a critical role as you navigate through life. Having a growth mindset can contribute to more success and fulfillment throughout your life. I also believe that a growth mindset will help you deal better with adversity and setback and overall bring more joy into your life.

The first step is a self-evaluation to understand your own dominant mindset and then determine if and what you may need to do to change it.

Dweck poses the following questions about intelligence to help you to determine your own type of mindset. Read each statement and decide whether you mostly agree with it or disagree with it.

  1. Your intelligence is something very basic about you that you can’t change very much.
  2. You can learn new things, but you can’t really change how intelligent you are.
  3. No matter how much intelligence you have, you can always change it quite a bit.
  4. You can always substantially change how intelligent you are.

She says, “Questions 1 and 2 are the fixed-mindset questions. Questions 3 and 4 reflect the growth mindset. Which mindset did you agree with more? You can be a mixture, but most people lean toward one or the other.”

She continues, “It’s not only your abilities; it’s your personal qualities too. Look at these statements about personality and character and decide whether you mostly agree or mostly disagree with each one. “

  1. You are a certain kind of person, and there is not much that can be done to really change that.
  2. No matter what kind of person you are, you can always change substantially.
  3. You can do things differently, but the important part of who you are can’t really be changed.
  4. You can always change basic things about the kind of person you are.

“Here questions 1 and 3 are the fixed-mindset questions and questions 2 and 4 reflect the growth mindset.”

Do You Need More?

At this point, you’ll have an idea of whether you tend to have more of a fixed- or growth mindset.

I want to tell you now, that you do have the ability to create a Powerful Mindset (which is a growth mindset), that will help you to achieve all of your dreams and goals.

You Make or Break Your Life in the First 3 Hours of the Day

Be More Productive and Get Back Your Life

“Wake up with determination. Go to bed with satisfaction.”

How are you using your time?

How productive are you during that time?

The traditional 9-5, eight-hour work day is not the most efficient model for the most productivity.

Many people are going through their routine on a daily basis because, “that’s how it’s done.” But over the past seven months many people have been forced to change their pattern and way of doing things whether they like it or not.

And guess what?… Many of them have realized that they are just as, or even more productive in their new environment, working from home, or some other new environment.

The pandemic of the past seven months has creating chaos and a lot of opportunities. For many, this is an opportunity to hit reset and figure out how things are going to be moving forward. If that is you, doesn’t it make sense to design it how you want it, rather than how you are told it should be?

I am going to share some ideas that will help you to be more productive and efficient with your time while being able to enjoy the most important things in life, like family and your time.

If You Win The Morning You Win The Day

“Set goals that make you want to jump out of bed in the morning”

Psychologist, Ron Friedman, says that the first three hours of your day are the most precious for maximizing your productivity.  My intent in this article is to share some ideas and strategies that you will be able to immediately implement that will change your life. These habits will make you more efficient and productive, while giving you back many hours of your time every week, and most importantly will allow you to get back your life.

Protect Your Mornings

If the first three hours of your day are the most precious for maximizing your productivity, you have to make sure that you are intentional with that time. This is the time in which your mind is most clear and readily active to do thoughtful work. This is when your willpower and self control are the strongest

Start the morning with a win - Photo by Pablo Heimplatz on Unsplash
Photo by Pablo Heimplatz on Unsplash

Never Hit Snooze!

“The best way to make your dreams come true is to wake up.”

Paul Valery

Start the day with a win, on your terms. When the alarm wakes you up, Never Hit Snooze! Take charge of your actions and get up immediately, excited and anxious to take on the day. You’ve started your day with a win.

In Extreme Ownership, How US Navy Seals Lead and Win, Jocko Willink and Leif Babin put it this way:

Discipline starts every day when the alarm clock goes off in the morning. The moment the alarm clock goes off is the first test and it sets the tone for the rest of the day. The test is simple. When the alarm clock goes off do you get up out of bed or do you lie there in comfort and fall back asleep.

They go on the explain that if you have the discipline to get out of bed, you win, you pass the test. If you are mentally weak at that moment and you let that weakness keep you in bed, you fail. Though it seems small, whichever decision you make will translate into more significant and substantial elements of your life.

My favorite quote in this book is, “Discipline is the difference between being good and being exceptional.”

Mindset Journal

“Your life is as good as your mindset.”

My day begins at 4:30AM with my Mindset Journal

There are six areas I focus on first thing in the morning with my Mindset Journal:

  1. Calendar – The night before, I added all my meetings and events to my calendar in my Mindset Journal. So unless something else has to be added, I’m just doing a quick review of the day.
  2. Tasks – The night before I also entered all of the tasks that I need to remember into my task list. In the Mindset Journal the task list area is an area to keep a full list of your tasks so that you can have them recorded and not worry about keeping them in your mind as a distraction. Once they are on your list, forget about them until they are moved to your priority list and need to be dealt with.
  3. Priorities – The next area I look at is my Priority List. This is not just a place to move your top tasks to. The most important thing at this point is to identify the outcome you desire for the day. Once you know the outcome that you need to achieve that day, take your top 3 or 4 tasks and move them to this list in order of their priority.
  4. Morning Mindset Questions – This is a key point in setting up your day for success. This is a list of six questions in my Mindset Journal that you need to answer every morning. Each question has its own significance, but to me the most important one is, “What can I do today that will take me outside of my comfort zone?” Read more about Mindset Questions at https://jeffheggie.com/mindset/
  5. Goals & Definite Chief Aim – The next step is to write out your top goals and Definite Chief Aim. In the front of the mindset journal I have you go through a number of exercise to gain clarity on your top goals. I also have you go through the practice of defining your Definite Chief Aim as outlined in the second chapter of Napoleon Hill’s book, Think and Grow Rich. I strongly believe it is very important to review your goals and Definite Chief Aim on a continual basis. I also believe it’s important to complete this part of the Mindset Journal by hand rather than typing because it takes longer, has you thinking about each goal and your Definite Chief Aim for an extended time.
  6. Morning Journal – This is the final step of my morning routine in my Mindset Journal, but one of the most important. There doesn’t have to be structure here, you just need to let your creativity flow. This is an area to let go and create your life. If you’re stuck, I suggest using these questions from Benjamin Hardy to stimulate your thoughts:
    • What are you trying to accomplish right now?
    • Where do you want to be in 90 days?
    • What is your purpose?
    • What are you grateful for?
    • Who is your future self?
    • What Power Moves are you going to make today?

That may seem like a lot to get through first thing in the morning, but it’s not. This is all quick and typically takes me less than 30 minutes.

I’m not going to spend the time in this article to talk about other topics such as: Evening Mindset Questions, Evening Journal, Visualization, etc. But these are topics I often talk about on my podcast, Jeff Heggie’s Daily Success Strategies that you can find HERE.

As soon as I finish my Mindset Journal I head to the gym for a workout. Some people argue that this is not the best time of the day to exercise. There are good arguments both ways. But for me, this is my ideal time to exercise.

60+ Benefits of Exercise – The Ultimate List

I’m not going to go into great detail here, but many studies have shown the benefits of exercise for everything from your health, to your focus, productivity, energy, and happiness. What I’ll suggest, is that it is a smart decision to ensure you add an exercise routine to your day.

Now would be a good time to also remind you how important proper nutrition, hydration, and sleep are to your overall wellbeing and success.

My time at the gym is not only a time to exercise, it’s time that allows me to listen to my favorite audio books and podcasts as well.

Clear Priorities

When I return from the gym my focus shifts for a bit. The next stage of my morning is getting the kids ready and taking them to school. But once that is done, my focus goes back to my productivity.

There are a number of things that I focus on that help me to set up this next portion of my day:

  • Set up your week for success – If you listen to my Daily Success Strategies podcast you know that every Monday morning I encourage my listeners to set up their week so that on Friday they’ll be able to look back and say that it has been a successful week, and they are closer to achieving their big goals. I believe it is important to begin the week with the end in mind. I encourage my listeners to leave a comment wherever they are listening to my podcast as to what they want to complete throughout the week to increase their level of accountability. Throughout the week it is important to reflect and gauge where you are at and make adjustments if needed. During my Friday episode I ask my listeners to reflect on the week. Did they make it a successful week, and are they closer to achieving their bigger goals because of it?
  • Block Time – Block Time will be some of your most precious and productive time. As you are setting your week up for success and reviewing your calendar in your Mindset Journal, you need to block off time to allow you to work on your most important projects without any distractions. This means no email, no phone calls, no social media, no staff, no family, etc. You need to train yourself and everyone around you that during Block Time, you are not to be interrupted.

*This photo shares a conversation from my Daily Success Strategies Facebook group that gives some valuable insight on Blocking Time from a leadership perspective.

  • Not-to-Do List – One of the biggest struggles I’ve faced myself and watched other entrepreneurs deal with is the need to do everything yourself if you want it to be done right. To allow yourself to be more productive and work on your business more than you are working in your business, the Not-to-Do List will be one of your most useful tools (read more HERE). In essence, the Not-to-Do List has you go through all of the tasks that you deal with and either (1) Delegate, (2) Automate, or (3) Eliminate everything that you can. Once you have done this, your time and focus can be on the most important and productive tasks at hand.
  • Personal Development – It’s easy to get busy, working on important things and at the end of the day you have an excuse that you just didn’t have time to read or work on your personal development that day. I believe that you need to make your personal development a priority. Whatever that means for you, whether it’s reading, listening to audios or podcasts, taking a course, or something else, plan it and make it happen. If you plan it, schedule it, and make it a priority you will find the time and it is guaranteed to pay off in both the long and short term.

Balance, The Myth

“Never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.”

Dolly Parton

Everyone is searching for the secret of creating a great work-life balance. Here’s the secret, it doesn’t exist, at least how many imagine it to be.

Brendon Burchard says, “the great mistake most people make is to think of balance in terms of evenly distributed hours… Most people have a lot more time off and more time with their families than they think. It’s just that they’re not intentional about that time and, hence, don’t enjoy that time “enough”… Instead of trying to balance hours, try to balance happiness or progress in your major life areas.”

An ancient prophet said, “…men are, that they might have joy.” Yes, we are here on this earth to have joy in our lives. Make the effort to “balance happiness or progress in your major life areas.” The best advice I’ve heard on this is, “When you are working, be at work. When you’re done work, stop working.” (I’m not sure who to credit that quote to, but it has stuck in my mind since I heard it)

“Family is not an important thing, it’s everything.”

Michael J. Fox

Times have changed and will continue to change. It’s up to you the path you take going forward. Within all the chaos and tragedy, there are opportunities to shape your future.

Whatever direction you take, the more productive you are, the more value you add.

My hope is that the ideas, tools, and strategies in this article will help you to set your life up for more happiness, success, and joy.

3 Steps to Change Your State of Being

Jeff Heggie Daily Success Strategies

Where Focus Goes, Energy Flows

What you think, you become.

What you feel, you attract.

What you imagine, you create.

Our state of being is always changing. We may be happy, sad, excited, depressed, anxious, and the list goes on and on. We have the ability to impact our own state of being.

In this episode of my Daily Success Strategies podcast I focus on three areas of our life that can not only impact, but intentionally change our state.

  • Pattern of Physiology – This is the way that we use our body. We can change our state of being simply by changing our posture, or the way we move our body.
  • The Language We Use – Our language can magnify or lower the intensity of our state. This includes both the language we use with other as well as the language we use with ourselves, or our self-talk. Get a FREE copy of my e-book, Fear to Fuel, HERE. My chapter in this book is from the “Turn Your Fear Into Fuel Summit,” where I spoke on having Powerful Self-Talk. You can also read more in my article at www.JeffHeggie.com/mindset.
  • Focus & Belief – What are you focusing on, and what do you believe it to mean? You cannot keep feeding the thing that you want to change by focusing on it and expect it to change. Whatever you focus on, you’ll get.

These are three powerful strategies that can change your state of being. But if you wait until you are in the state that you want to change, it will be difficult to make happen. If you are dealing with anxiety and at that moment tell yourself that you should change your physiology, language, or focus, it will be very difficult to do.

To be effective at this, you must make a decision right now. Make the decision that when you find yourself in a state that you do not want to be in, you will do these things. Don’t wait until that moment.

Imagine yourself in the state you’d like to be in right now. Recognize your posture and how you move. How do you talk to yourself and others? What are you focusing on? By being aware of these things when you are in a good state, it makes it easier to change your physiology, language, and focus to match this state when you want to make a change.

If you would like to have a free strategy session to discuss how my Mindset Secrets strategies could help you to gain clarity and achieve your goals, send me an email at jeff@jeffheggie.com with the subject line “State.” For a limited time I’m offering FREE 45-minute strategy sessions to show how these strategies can help you!

Your Decisions Will Shape Your Life

“The best way to predict the future is to create it.”

Abraham Lincoln

One day, you are going to become your future self. Who is that person?

Think back ten years ago. Where were you? What were you doing? What were your goals and dreams?

Is that where you are today? Is this where you planned to be? Why, or why not?

Have you been intentional about creating the life you want, or has it just happened? Is it just the life you’ve been dealt?

Are there times in the past ten years in which different decisions would have created an entirely different life than you have now?

  • A career change, or not?
  • To get married, or divorced?
  • To have children, to put it off, or not at all?
  • To invest in your own personal development, or not…

Our lives are determined by the decisions we make and the actions we take. Your future self, your future life, and the person you will ultimately become will be determined by the decisions you make and the actins you take today. Now is the time to design the life that you want, not after it has happened.

In Personality Isn’t Permanent, Benjamin Hardy said, “successful people start by figuring out who they want to become and use that as a filter for everything they do.”

There will always be consequences to your decisions. Many people automatically think of negative consequences when they hear the word, but there are positive consequences as well. Make good decisions, do good things, and there are positive consequences.

In ten short years you will be looking back on today the same way you look back on 2010 now (I’m pretty sure you’ll never forget 2020). Will you be happy, or disappointed? Will you be grateful, or regretful?

As spiritual leader, Thomas S. Monson, often would say, “Your decisions determine your destiny.”

Everything that happens in your life – both good and bad – begins with a decision. The decisions that you are making right now will determine what happens now and will also shape your future.

In this article I want to share ideas that will help you to make the best decisions to create the life and future that you desire.

“Once I made a decision, I never thought about it again.”

Michael Joran

When you search, “the root of the word decision,” we learn it has Latin roots. The meaning of the word “decide” comes from the Latin word, decidere, which is a combination of two words: de = off + caedere = cut. Decide-to-cut-off

Decide to cut off

Making a decision means that you are committing to a result and you’re cutting off other possibilities.

When we talk about a real decision, it reminds me of the Yoda quote, “Do or do not, there is no try.” When you make a true decision, you’ve cut off all other possibilities. There’s no ‘try,’ you either do, or you do not.

I remember listening to eight-time Olympic medalist, Apolo Ohno, speak at an event in Salt Lake City. He was sharing his story of preparing to compete in the Olympics. At that time, food had only one purpose for him, it was fuel for his body. He had made the decision as to the person he needed to be, and what he needed to do to win the Olympics and he ‘cut off’ anything that did not contribute to that plan. He couldn’t be tempted by junk food, or anything else that would not improve his chances of winning. He had made a decision.

In 2012 I had the opportunity to meet Clayton Christensen and hear him speak. He shared an impactful story that speaks strongly about making committed decisions.

I’ll share it here from his article in the Harvard Business Review in an article titled, How Will You Measure Your Life (Https://hbr.org/2010/07/how-will-you-measure-your-life ):

“I’d like to share a story about how I came to understand the potential damage of “just this once” in my own life. I played on the Oxford University varsity basketball team. We worked our tails off and finished the season undefeated. The guys on the team were the best friends I’ve ever had in my life. We got to the British equivalent of the NCAA tournament – and made it to the final four. It turned out the championship game was scheduled to be played on a Sunday. I had made a personal commitment to God at age 16 that I would never play ball on Sunday. So I went to the coach and explained my problem. He was incredulous. My teammates were, too, because I was the starting center. Every one of the guys on the team came to me and said, “You’ve got to play. Can’t you break the rule just this one time?”

I’m a deeply religious man, so I went away and prayed about what I should do. I got a very clear feeling that I shouldn’t break my commitment – so I didn’t play in the championship game.

In many ways that was a small decision – involving one of several thousand Sundays in my life. In theory, surely I could have crossed over the line just that one time and then not done it again. But looking back on it, resisting the temptation whose logic was “In this extenuating circumstance, just this one, it’s OK” has proven to be one of the most important decisions of my life. Why? My life has been one unending stream of extenuating circumstances. Had I crossed the line that one time, I would have done it over and over in the years that followed.

The lesson I learned from this is that it’s easier to hold to your principles 100% of the time than it is to hold to them 98% of the time. If you give in to “just this once,” based on a marginal cost analysis, as some of my former classmates have done, you’ll regret where you end up. You’ve got to define for yourself what you stand for and draw the line in a safe place.”

When you make and commit to a true decision, you’re cutting off all other possibilities. You will hold to it 100% of the time, not 98%.

Many people fear making true decisions because it does mean cutting off all other possibilities. They fear not knowing exactly how to make it happen and turn their dreams into reality. As a result, they never make the decision and they never live the life that they deserve.

You don’t have to know the ‘how’ to creating results in order to make a decision. The important thing is to make the decision and commit that you will find a way no matter what!

Before you make a decision, you have to be clear on what you want from it.

Decide What You Want

“Sometimes it’s the smallest decisions that can change your life forever.”

Keri Russell

One of the most important things you can do to achieve your dreams and goals is to gain clarity. Creating clear goals is one of the main purposes of my free Momentum Training series. Clarity gives you power to produce the results that you really want in life. Making true decisions gives you clarity.

How are you going to live the next ten years of your life? What are you going to do today to create that life in the future? What are you willing to do? What are you going to stand for? What are you committed to?

Now is the time to design that future.

In the Momentum Series I use future pacing to help you identify your goals. I have you imagine yourself one year from now. You’ve just had the best year of your life. I then have you reflect on what would have had to have happened to make it the best year of your life. That is the beginning of figuring out your goals for the next year. Your goals will be to achieve those things that caused you to have the best year of your life.

As you are designing your future now, you can do the same thing. See yourself in ten years. Your life has never been better. What has happened to make it that way? What do you need to do to make that a reality? What decisions do you have to make now?

If you don’t put the effort into this and make the decisions about how you are going to live, you have already made a decision – the decision to let your environment direct and dictate your life, rather than creating and shaping it yourself. From those two options, which life do you really want?

Don’t just decide the things that will happen and the results that you are committed to, but also decide who the person is that you are committed to become

Take Actions

“You are what you do, not what you say you’ll do.”

Carl Gustav Jung

When you make a true decision it means that you are fully committed. You’re not going to dabble, you’re in, 100%.

Making the decision is often more difficult than taking the actions to make it happen. So be smart about making your decisions, but make them quickly and get to work. In Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill says, “Men who succeed reach decisions promptly, and change them, if at all, very slowly.”

Often, just making the decision results in things coming together for it’s attainment.

Once you have made a decision, begin to act immediately to work towards it.
In our attainment of our desires, Napoleon Hill instructs us to “create a definite plan for carrying out your desire, and begin at once, whether you are ready or not.”

As yo begin this journey, you’ll have many learning opportunities. Things won’t always go as planned. You will succeed, and you will fail. These are both opportunities for growth, reflection, and learning.

Learn and Change

“The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.”

Henry Ford

Merely making a decision does not guarantee your success. But it places you significantly ahead of those not making decisions.

Tony Robbins said, “No matter how prepared you are, there’s one thing that I can absolutely guarantee: if you’re on the river of life, it’s likely you’re going to hit a few rocks. That’s not being negative; that’s being accurate. The key is that when you do run aground, instead of beating yourself up for being such a “failure,” remember that there are no failures in life. There are only results. If you didn’t get the results you wanted, learn from this experience so that you have references about how to make better decisions in the future.”

My friend, Eric Chang, recently presented at a Tedx Event. The topic of his speech was, “Why I’ve Learned to Stop Saying These Three Dangerous Words: Don’t Give Up.” In his presentation, Eric shows us the difference between “don’t give up,” and “test something different.”

As you are working towards your dreams, goals, and future, when you hit the rocks and things don’t work as you had planned, that is your opportunity to learn and “test something different.” When you don’t get the results you want, it means you need to be doing something in a different way. What you have done, like Thomas Edison, you have found a way that will not get the result you are looking for. Get over it and test something different. Then if that doesn’t work out, at that point you can give up… Are you kidding me?! Of course not! You’ve successfully found something else that doesn’t work, now you can test something different.

“Ten years from now, you will surely arrive. The question is where? Who will you have become? How will you live? What will you contribute?”

Tony Robbins

Don’t go through life as a sheep, letting your environment create your life and your future.

Become very clear on who you want to become, where you want to go, and what you want to do. If you want help with this, use my free Momentum Series training.

Once you have gained that level of clarity, the most powerful thing that you can do for yourself is to decide. Make the important decisions that will shape and impact your life today, tomorrow, and into the future.

If you’re at 98%, you have not decided. To decide means you have ‘cut off’ all other options. You wouldn’t ‘like’ to lose ten pounds and get in shape, you’re ‘committed’ to it and you won’t even consider anything that doesn’t take you closer to that decision.

As you see the person that you want to be in the future and the life that you intend to create, don’t just look at it as two points. Don’t just look at today as Point A, and that future self you’ve created as Point B, ten years into the future. Remember that creating a successful life and arriving at the place you want to be in ten years, includes the life, the experiences, the trials, joy, and everything else that happens along the way.

“Decisions determine your destiny,” make the true decisions that are going to create that life that you want so that you can have the amazing future you deserve. Make the decisions that will also allow you to make the next few months, weeks, and days great. Don’t just look at making your long-term future great when you can still make 2020 great as well. It is possible and I wish you luck! My hope is that through this article I’ve been able to show you the importance of clarity and truly making decisions throughout your journey.

A mentor or coach can help you navigate this journey and help you to avoid many fo the problems you’ll face doing it on your own. When finding a coach or mentor to help you, make sure it’s someone that will be honest with you (even if it hurts your feelings) and hold you accountable. If this is something you’re looking for, this is what I do. Send me a message at jeff@jeffheggie.com with the subject line ‘Decision.’ We can set up a free strategy session to see if I can help you.

Good luck. Dream Big, and enjoy life now!

Why You Need a Coach

The best athletes in the day, the Gretzky’s, the Michael Jordan’s, they all had a coach. Still to this day, the best have coaches. Because the coach can see what you can’t see.

Tony Robbins

Many of the most well known and successful people, from Oprah Winfrey to Bill Clinton, Leonardo DiCaprio to Hugh Jackman all worked extensively with a coach. When people who have never had a coach before first talk to me about coaching, the beginning of the conversation typically sounds something like this:

“I feel like I need a coach, but I really don’t know. What would a coach do for me?”

I was recently at a Tony Robbins UPW (Unleash the Power Within) event where Tony said, “Everybody needs a coach or a mentor. Someone that is not a close friend and will be direct and honest.”

Eric Schmidt, chairman of Alphabet (former CEO of Google) said: “everyone needs a coach.”

Obviously, not everyone is going to go out and hire a coach. Would they benefit from it if they did hire a good coach? Absolutely.

But my guess is that if you are reading this, you’re not just part of the “everyone” crowd. My guess is that you belong to the group of people that know that you are responsible for your own life and there are always opportunities for growth and improvement.

Whatever your situation, you don’t have to settle for the life you are living, it’s possible to achieve more.

What I won’t show you in this article is how a coach will solve all of your problems for you. A coach won’t achieve your goals, save your marriage, get you into shape, make your company successful, or make you rich. There are many things that a coach is able to do to help you do all of those things, but you are still one that will need to do them.

What I will do in this article is show you some of the things that a coach will help you with that can bring more joy, success, and achievement into your life. I’ll show you that if you want to have more success in your life, a coach will be a great investment in yourself.

Coaching is one of the most valuable tools in the world. A coach has a different perspective and can see some things that you can’t see because they are looking from the outside

One of the most common things that I hear when someone tells me that they need a coach is that they need someone to hold them accountable.  This is why Tony Robbins says that you need a coach or mentor that is not a close friend or family member. A coach isn’t there to be your friend. A coach is there to produce results. You need a coach that will hold you to your word and keep you accountable.

A coach is focused on helping you to create lasting results. She will hold  you accountable to achieve your desired results.

But you can’t be accountable if you don’t know where you are or where you are going. That’s why it’s important to have clarity.

Gain Clarity

Do you have a coach? If not, you could be limiting your career success.

William Arruda

In The Strangest Secret, Earl Nightingale says:

“Think of a ship with the complete voyage mapped out and planned. The captain and crew know exactly where the ship is going and how long it will take – it has a definite goal. And 9,999 times out of 10,000, it will get there.

Now let’s take another ship – just like the first – only let’s not put a crew on it, or a captain at the helm. Let’s give it no aiming point, no goal, and no destination. We just start the engines and let it go.i think you’ll agree that if it gets out of the harbor at all, it will either sink or wind up on some deserted beach – a derelict. It can’t go anyplace because it has no destination and no guidance.”

A coach will help you to gain clarity in your goals and what you need to do to achieve them. A coach will help you to gain clarity in all areas of your life and in your decision making. Without clarity, you’re no different than the ship without a crew and captain, with no aiming pint, no goal, and no destination.

However, you can have all the clarity in the world and if you don’t believe you can do it, you won’t. You have to have the right mindset to reach your desired destination.

Master your mindset and you’ll master your life.

Jeff Heggie

I believe that this is the most important aspect of coaching. Without the proper mindset, you will fail at all of the other points I’ve listed here.

Many people live their lives controlled by their limiting beliefs that tell them why they can’t achieve their dreams. Why they can’t reach their goals. Why they can’t… Why they can’t…

A good coach is able to help you to develop a powerful mindset that allows you to have faith in your goals and plans. A powerful mindset allows you to build your self-confidence. As your confidence increases, your momentum cycle spirals upwards bringing you more great results.

Having the right mindset allows you to believe.

Pushes You

Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe it can achieve.

Napoleon Hill

A coach is there to push you. Without action, the perfect plan won’t succeed. The captain and crew can know exactly where they are going and have all the tools, but if they never leave the harbor, they will never get to their desired destination.
A good coach will push you to step out of your comfort zone on a regular basis. The more often you are forced to step out of your comfort zone, the larger that comfort zone becomes.

Every day that you take intentional actions, you’ll get closer to your goals.

Saves You Time and Money

Don’t wait for opportunity, create it.

In 2005 I founded a company called Kodiak Mountain Stone. I wish that I could say that I have ran it absolutely perfectly since then, but I haven’t. I’ve had a number of learning experiences over the past 15 years. If you were to start that same business today, how valuable would my knowledge and experience be to you? How much time and money could you save by having that knowledge?

Your coach may not be in your same industry, but a coach with a diverse background and a lot of experience will save you time, money, and likely a lot of pain. They will also add an outside, fresh perspective that can open your eyes and mind to opportunities that had not yet occurred to you.

In 2008, in the middle of a recession that was reaping havoc on our industry I was considering a number of different options to pivot our company. But none of them seemed to fit exactly what I was hoping for. But in the middle of it all I had the opportunity to take part in a conference which I sat at a table with a lady who owned a scrapbooking company. As she shared a story about a pivot she had made with her company, it occurred to me that I could do something very similar with my stone company. I would have never thought that I would get ideas from a scrapbook company to implement into my stone company, but it worked.

This is a benefit a coach brings as an outside set of eyes to your life and business. They will see things from their own perspective and be able to give you options you may have never thought of.

Believing in yourself is the first secret to success.

A coach can help you to achieve your goals quicker than you will do it on your own.

Whether you’re working on your business, your life, your relationships, or something else, a good coach will be a smart investment.

Studies conducted by the International Coaching Federation on the effectiveness of life coaching showed 99% of the people they interviewed saw their experience working with a life coach as rewarding, while 96% stated they would do it again. Moreover, 65% said working with a coach helped improve their performance at work, and 80% said it helped improve their self-confidence.

If you want to reach and even exceed your biggest dreams and goals faster than you thought possible, take a look at the coaching packages we offer to see which is the best fit for you. He can find my High Achievers Coaching Programs HERE

The Mindset Journal

We Become What We Think About

Earl Nightingale

Every day, our thoughts matter. The things we think about become our reality.

I’ve spent a lot of time this past year talking and writing about goals, habits, personal development, mindset, and anything closely related to any of these topics.

Our daily habits have an incredible impact on our lives in both the short, and long-term. Our habits shape our lives and if we are intentional with our habits, they can bring us a lot of joy and success.

The difference between successful people is often in their habits. Successful people do the things that unsuccessful people are unwilling to do.

Many success habits are simple to do. But the problem, as Jeff Olsen says, “things that are easy to do, are also easy not to do.”

Mindset Questions

Your life is as good as your mindset.

In my article, Mindset Questions: The Real Secret to Success, I explain how our Reticular Activating System (RAS) works, and how we can use it as a tool to achieve our goals and desires with Mindset Questions.

I strongly suggest you read the article. You will gain a better understanding of my ideas with Mindset Questions and can get the morning and evening Mindset Questions that I suggest using.

Mindset Journal

Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice, and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.

With everything I have been talking about in my articles, podcasts, and coaching I’ve explained the simple disciplines that can be adopted to help you develop a powerful mindset that will lead you to success.

I am finally excited to start to share my Mindset Journal with those who would like to implement these daily success strategies into their own lives.

My Mindset Journal includes:

  • Goal Setting – Follow the system (From my Free Momentum Series) that will help you to develop a clear vision of your goals, develop a path to achieve them, and most importantly discover your true ‘WHY’ behind each goal.
  • Scheduling – This journal allows you to properly plan and schedule your time. One of the most important habits you can develop with your scheduling is Blocking Time. Learn more about this topic in episode 013 of my Daily Success Strategies podcast HERE.
  • Journaling – Journaling is a powerful tool to bring out your ideas and creativity. There are a number of easy to use journaling tools in my Mindset Journal. It begins with your Morning Journal [Create Your Life – write, design, and create your future…]. Evening Journal to reflect on your day, the things you’ve learned, and the thoughts you’ve had. Daily History – a brief history of the activities from the day. Weekly History – a time to review and note the most important things from your Daily History that week. Monthly History – a review and history of the most important things from your Weekly History journal entires. Annual History – this is an opportunity to review your Monthly History journal entries and recap the year.
  • Outcomes/Tasks/Top Priorities – Outcomes are more important than activities. Each morning you begin by reviewing your tasks and top priorities and then stating the outcome you are committed to achieve that day.
  • Mindset Questions – The day begins with your Morning Mindset Questions and ends with your Evening Mindset Questions.
  • Note Pages – In developing this journal, at times I was using three different journals to accomplish all of the things above. By including everything above and also having pages every day for my notes, I have brought everything together into one single journal.

As of now, the Mindset Journal is available as a PDF download. For myself, I print it and have it coil bound and it has worked great. In the future it will be developed into a fully bound journal, but as more and more people use it I plan to make changes to make it as useful as possible.

If you decide to give it a try, I’m confident it will help you develop success habits that will make a difference in your life. I want to hear from you. What do you like? What would you like to see changed with the layout, or anything else? How has it impacted your life?

13 Principles of Think and Grow Rich

For the past couple of weeks in our Inner Circle Mastermind calls, we have been discussing the book, Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. These have been some incredible discussions as members of our mastermind group who range from entrepreneurs, business owners, managers, executives, and students discuss how these principles are applicable to them in their own ways.

If you are interested in finding out more about our Inner Circle Mastermind, you can click HERE.

As I began my studies of Napoleon Hill’s second principle, Faith, I found these notes I had previously made. They outline the 13 Principles from Think and Grow Rich and include many inspiring and motivational quotes from the author, Napoleon Hill. I want to share them here for others to be able to reference and use.

13 Principles of Think & Grow Rich

The well-known and best selling book by Napoleon Hill is a classic that contains lessons for anyone who wants to find their purpose in life.

If you are searching for success, or you’re just feeling like life should be better than this, you have to read Think and Grow Rich. (1937)

For most of us, this is a book that needs to be read, reread and then read some more until the secrets and principles have become a part of us.

I first read this book in January 2004 and since then have reread and listened to it a number of times each year since. I continue to learn more from it each and every time I read it or listen to it.

“In every chapter of this book, mention has been made of the money-making/success secret which has made fortunes for hundreds of exceedingly wealthy men whom I have carefully analyzed over a long period of years.

The secret to which I refer has been mentioned no fewer than a hundred times  throughout this book. It has not been directly named, for it seems to work more successfully when it is merely uncovered and left in sight, where those who are ready, and searching for it, may pick it up.

A peculiar thing abut this secret is that those who once acquire it and use it, find themselves literally swept on to success.”

Summary Of The 13 Principles

Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe it can achieve.

Napoleon Hill
Napoleon Hill Think and Grow Rich 13 Principles Jeff Heggie Success Coaching

First Principle: Desire

There are no limitations to the mind except those we acknowlege

Napoleon Hill
  • For anyone to be successful, it is crucial that there exist in them the desire to be great or at least better than their current state
  • Desire drives motivation to take action, wishing won’t make it so
  • Deep, burning desire means your focus will be on what you are wanting
  • Desire will help you feel and believe you can obtain what it is you want
  • “If you truly desire something so keenly that your desire is an obsession, you will have no difficulty in convincing yourself that you will acquire it. The object is to want something, and to become so determined to have it that you convince yourself you will have it.”
  • Desire will catapult you into the actions that bring results
  • Desire pushes you out of your comfort zone because you will not sit idly without doing everything possible to attain the object of your desire
  • No one is ready for a thing until he believes he can acquire it. The state of mind must be belief, not more hope or wish. Open-mindedness is essential for belief.”
  • No more effort is required to aim high in life, to demand abundance and prosperity, than is required to accept misery and poverty

Second Principle: Faith

Faith is the head chemist of the mind. When faith is bd with thought, the subconscious mind instantly picks up the vibration, translates it into its spiritual equivalent, and transmits it to Infinite Intelligence, as in the case of prayer.

Napoleon Hill
  • “Faith is the head chemist of the mind. When faith is blended with thought, the subconscious mind instantly picks up the vibration, translates it into its spiritual equivalent, and transmits it to Infinite Intelligence…”
  • For a desire to come true, you must have faith that it is possible and that it will come true
  • When you truly have faith in a desire and believe it will come true, it starts manifesting into its physical self
  • “Your belief, or faith, is the element which determines the action of your subconscious mind.”
  • “One comes to believe whatever one repeats to one’s self whether the statement is true or false.”
  • Our beliefs hold so much power that they almost always come true, so if you want a desire to become real, believe in it and have faith that it will come true.
  • You have to truly believe that you deserve what you desire

Third Principle: Auto Suggestion

Every adversity, every failure and every heartache carries with it the seed of an equivalent or a greater benefit.

Napoleon Hill
  • “Through the dominating thoughts with one permits to remain in the conscious mind, (whether these thoughts be negative or positive is immaterial), the principle of autosuggestion voluntarily reaches the subconscious mind and influences it with these thoughts.”
  • “Your ability to use the principle of autosuggestion will depend, very largely, upon your capacity to concentrate upon a given desire until that desire becomes a burning obsession”
  • “The subconscious mind takes any orders given it in a spirit of absolutions faith, and acts upon those orders, although the orders often have to be presented over and over again, through repetition, before they are interpreted by the subconscious mind.”
  • “Man may become the master of himself, and of his environment, because he has the power to influence his own subconscious mind.”

Fourth Principle: Specialized Knowledge

Anything acquired without effort, and without cost is generally unappreciated, often discredited.

Napoleon Hill
  • If acquiring knowledge ensured success, professors lead the Forbes 400 list, while dropouts like Bill Gates would not be worth $106 Billion
  • Just having knowledge does not make one intelligent or successful
  • It’s not acquiring knowledge, but using it that makes one successful
  • The correct use of specialized knowledge can make one successful which is why instead of focusing on gaining knowledge, focus on the knowledge that will make your desires come true and help you achieve success
  • “Successful men, in all callings, never stop acquiring specialized knowledge related to their major purpose, business, or profession.”

Firth Principle: Imagination

Man can create anything which he can imagine

Napoleon Hill
  • “…man can create anything which he can imagine”
  • “Man’s only limitation, within reason, lies in his development and use of his imagination.”
  • Imagination can prove powerful if used for the right purpose instead of just using it for entertainment.
  • Everything begins in the mind – horseless carriage, light bulb, iPhone

Sixth Principle: Organized Planning

Success requires no explanations. Failure permits no alibis.

Napoleon Hill
  • “The most intelligent man living cannot succeed…without plans which are practical and workable.”
  • In order to succeed, you need a concrete plan to achieve what you desire
  • Plans => Goals

Seventh Principle: Decision

Tell the world what you intend to do, but first show it.

Napoleon Hill
  • Must believe strongly in your decisions
  • “If you are influenced by the opinions of others, you will have no desire of your own.”
  • “This who reach decisions promptly and definitely, know what they want, and generally get it.”
  • “The world has the habit of making room for the man whose words and actions show that he knows where he is going.”
  • “Definiteness of decision always requires courage, sometimes very great courage.”

Eighth Principle: Persistence

If one does not possess persistence, one does not achieve noteworthy success in any calling

Napoleon Hill
  • Many people fail at their first attempt
  • Some quit at this point while others continue and may still fail on their 100th attempt
  • Lack of persistence is one of the major causes of failure – quite
  • Desire => you want it and you will do anything and spend as much time as possible to make it a reality

Ninth Principle: Power of the Master Mind

Happiness is found in Doing, not merely in Possessing.

Napoleon Hill
  • “No two minds ever come together without, thereby, creating a third, invisible, intangible force which may be likened to a third mind.”
  • Surround with like-minded, success focused people who want to reach their goals, will help you reach yours (vs lazy)

Tenth Principle: Transmutation

When any negative emotion presents itself in one’s mind, it can be transmuted into a positive, or constructive emotion, by the simple procedure of changing one’s thoughts.

Napoleon Hill
  • Strong energy within us that can be used to attract those we have an interest in
  • Personal magnetism
    • Hand-shake
    • Tone of voice
    • Posture and carriage of the body
    • Personal appearance

Eleventh Principle: The Subconscious Mind

Anybody can wish for riches, and most people do, but only a few know that a definite plan, plus a burning desire for wealth, are the only dependable means of accumulating wealth.

Napoleon Hill
  • “You cannot entirely control your subconscious mind, but you can voluntarily hand over to it any plan, desire, or purpose which you wish transformed into concrete form.”
  • Often, we truly want something but are limited by our beliefs that we cannot make it a reality
  • We can control our subconscious mind by controlling and quieting our conscious mind and instilling the beliefs we want to see reflected in our lives
  • In simple words, our subconscious is the real mastermind that decides what will and will not manifest in our lives

Twelfth Principle: The Brain

The ladder of success is never crowded at the top.

Napoleon Hill
  • Creativity spikes, our subconscious mind reaches a state where it can be programmed comparatively easily which is why we need to be involved in creative tasks that help us get into the right state of mind
  • When we repeat affirmations in our conscious mind while allowing ourselves to reach this state of mind through creative visualizations or imaginations, the pricutres in our conscious mind are perceived as reality by our subconscious mind
  • Simple: When we visualize something, our subconscious mind cannot differentiate between the scheme being a figment of our imagination or actual reality

Final Principle: The Sixth Sense

All men have become what they are because of their dominating thoughts and desires.

Napoleon Hill
  • Intuition or gut feeling
  • Tuning into your subconscious mind
