Idea Broker

Making a 22 hour drive from Southern Alberta to Arizona gives me plenty of time to think, and listen to audio books. Fortunately, this time I’m not alone on the trip so my wife has shared the driving, which gives me time to work and write.

While I was in Canada we were spending time with family and I had a chance to visit with a nephew who had asked me to suggest some good books for him to read. We were talking about the different books and he shared a few with me that he had enjoyed that I hadn’t read yet. One of them was Smarter Faster Better by Charles Duhigg. So this is one of the books I have been listening to on my trip home.

There are many intriguing thoughts and stories in this book, but something that really caught my attention was in his chapter on Innovation when he talked about Innovation Brokers or Idea Brokers. The reason this was so interesting to me is because I have been spending a lot of time recently preparing for an upcoming Mastermind Group, and the ideas he shared help to explain how and why a mastermind group works so well.

In his book, Duhigg refers to the work of Ronald Burt in a 2004 study he conducted. Burt conducted a study with a large number of managers in a company and found that ideas that were classified as creative came from people who were particularly talented at taking concepts from one division of the company and explaining them to employees in other departments. Burt explained that people connected across groups are more familiar with alternative ways of thinking and behaving. “This is not creativity born of genius, it’s creativity as an import, export business.”

As I listened to this and the rest of the book I decided to do a little more research on Burt’s ideas. On this topic, when people seek out insights from people in different fields, different organizations or of different mindsets, Burt refers to it as “brokerage.” He explains how this can lead to better ideas, improving processes and more. He says, “if you’re charged with innovation, you need to branch out and build brokerage.” “It’s essential. The new ideas we come up with come from the places where we vary. A person who only knows about the variations in what they do will get better at what they’re doing, but will always come to the same place.”

This is exactly where the power of a mastermind group comes from. I recently wrote a post High Performance Mastermind Group, and explained a challenge I had dealt with for some time which I had not found a solution to. But when I had an opportunity to sit with a group of entrepreneurs who were all in very different industries than me, we quickly found a solution to my problem as a group because the others in the group looked at my situation differently and had been through their own challenges in their industries.

Joining a mastermind group allows you to look at each other’s problems and challenges from different perspectives, industries and life experiences. But it also gives you an opportunity to discover things that are holding you back that you were not even aware of. It allows you to be more innovative in your business, your life and your thinking in general.

Join our Elite Performance Mastermind and prepare yourself to take your life and your business to the next level! You will be with an elite group of individuals, from different industries, backgrounds and different areas of the country that will be able to share their brilliance and knowledge with the group while you do the same for them. I’ll also be sharing some powerful tools you can use to give yourself the power to create the future you’ve been dreaming about.

If you don’t own or run your own business, don’t count yourself out. Whatever it is you do, you will do it better after joining this mastermind. You’ll think different. You’ll network. You’ll have the tools to be successful.

Be your best entrepreneur. Be the best manager. Be the best employee. Be the best YOU.

Featured

Have you ever looked in the mirror and said to yourself, “I thought I’d be further along by now.” I have! In life and in business I’ve had that conversation with myself before. But it’s ok. Life doesn’t always go as planned. But that doesn’t mean you have to accept it.

The problem is that if you look in the mirror again in a year from now and you’re no further ahead.

DON’T LET THAT HAPPEN!

Often times when we are not as far along in life or in business as we had hoped we would be, it’s because we don’t know how to get things to the next level. We don’t know how to overcome the current challenges we are facing.

Or it’s been going on for so long we’ve just settled into things and this is just the way it is.

But there is a way for you to amplify the performance of your life and business while you’re tearing down the barriers that are holding you back from that next level! When you have an opportunity to sit and mastermind with smart, successful, like-minded people who are wanting to take their lives and businesses to the next level as well, you WILL find your answers. You WILL discover the things that will make the difference.

If you don’t want to be looking in the mirror in 6 months or 12 months from now wondering why you’re not any further ahead, you need to join us for our ELITE PERFORMANCE MASTERMIND in Gilbert AZ.

Daxon Heggie 2018/19 Sophomore Basketball Highlights

Another season of basketball has gone by in a flash. My son, Daxon, played for American Leadership Academy in Queen Creek, Arizona. He had a good season and grew as a player. I’m looking forward to watching him develop more over the coming years. His dedication and work ethic are going to open up opportunities.

Tia Heggie Basketball – Senior Year

Proud of how Tia played in her senior year of basketball and I am so grateful for the opportunity I have had to coach her.

She was just recently awarded the Regional Offensive Player of the Year and named to the All-Region 1st Team. Hopefully later in the month she will also be recognized at the State level.

Kids Basketball Updates

It has been a while since I wrote anything about my kids and our basketball lives but for the last while basketball has kept us very busy.

After breaking his leg and requiring surgery in their last game of football this season we didn’t think that my son, Daxon, would be playing basketball at all this season. But he had a great physio-therapist that worked him hard but also made sure that he didn’t do too much too soon and now we at least have had the opportunity to watch him play in some of the final games this season. Once he received the ok to play it has been good to see his determination and desire to not only get playing again, but to keep getting better. Between both Tia and Daxon we’ve spent hundreds of early morning hours working on their games. But usually I have to wake up and then drag them out of bed. Since Daxon has been playing again we have been going to the gym most mornings for workouts. I get up at 4:30am and when I come out of my room to make sure he’s getting up, he’s usually already sitting in the living room waiting for me. Not only the that, he’s also practicing twice per day with the freshman team and the JV team and then after every game we spend another hour or two in the gym. Season is nearing the end, but if he stays this determined he’s definitely going to be ready to have an impact next season.

Tia is in her senior year and I’ve had the opportunity to be her head coach. We’ve had our ups and downs but overall it has been a great season. Our team has had the cards stacked against us in a number of ways. Because of other commitments we had some of our returning players decide not to play this year. On top of that we have been riddled with injuries. There have been games that we have a total of five girls that can play. But these girls have done a great job fighting and keeping great attitudes. Despite the challenges we’ve had, Tia has had a great season personally and she really loves her teammates. If you look at the entire United States girls high school basketball, at all levels right now she is ranked 173rd in scoring. Out of all of Arizona she is number seven, and in our region she is number one!

Here are her current stats and how she ranks in our region after 24 games:

Scoring – #1 22.5 points per game

Field goals – #1 168

3-Point – #1 47

Free Throws – #1 156 (86 ahead of 2nd place)

Assists – #2 3.1 assists per game

Steals – #2 6.1 steals per game

Charges Taken – #2 0.1 per game

Double Doubles – #4 5 double doubles

Rebounding – #9 6.8 rebounds per game

Blocks – #11 0.5 blocks per game

On January 26 Tia scored 32 points in our last home game of the season. When she scored her 11th point in that game it marked a big milestone. It was her 1,000th varsity career point! The reality is that she achieved it earlier but we only had her 10th grade stats when she played for the Cardston Cougars for the 13 league games that she had. It didn’t include any of their tournament or playoff games. So from her first year of varsity basketball in Cardston we only counted 190 points. Last year at American Leadership Academy (ALA) she played in 17 games and had 346 points, and after 21 games this season she had 485 points. That means that she averaged just over 20 points per game up to that point over the past three years. This year she has had a couple of 40+ point games, including one that was 47 points.

I’m excited to see how we can finish the end of this season and I’m very excited to see where this sport takes her in the future!

Basketball Season is Underway!

As I’ve always said, this blog is about my life as a father and husband and not only business. So this post is more related to the things I really love, my family and supporting them in what they do.

Our family really enjoys this time of year. The kids are back in full swing of basketball mode and we are doing our best to follow them around to get to all their events. All of my kids are attending American Leadership Academy in Queen Creek, Arizona. Daxon’s season has just got underway (8th grade) and they are 1-1. I’ll have some game tape for him that I’ll share soon.

I have the opportunity to help coach Tia’s team. She’s a junior this year and has started out strong. Her stats can be tracked on MaxPreps HERE

This past weekend we played in the Holiday Hoops women’s Basketball Tournament in Phoenix and Tia was named to the All Tournament All-Star Team. Our first game was probably her best where she had 29 points, she was 7 for 9 from behind the three point line, had 16 rebounds and 8 steals.

It’s going to be a fun year watching both Tia and Daxon, we are really looking forward to it!

California For Some Family Time

The header of my blog says, The Life of a Father, Husband and Entrepreneur. I use that because my post may jump around a bit. I enjoy writing about the business side of life but the father and husband part of my life are by far the most important to me. That’s why one of my categories is Heggie Life. This is the category that is more focused on family and events than business.

I enjoy the fact that we do a lot together as a family and when one person in our family has an opportunity to do something we can usually find a way to make it a family event. My kids are active and involved in a lot of things. My oldest two, Tia and Daxon, are the most active and I love following them around.

We recently moved from Alberta, Canada to Queen Creek, Arizona for business reasons. My daughter had a basketball coach a few years ago at the Michael Jordan Flight School basketball camp that heard we had moved and he invited her to come to California to play on his basketball team, the Candace Parker GBL Rebels, for the West Coast Fall Exposure Tournament.

It turned out to be a great weekend for the whole family. We were able to spend a day at Corona del Mar, Newport Beach and then two days in the gym watching Tia play basketball.

School basketball will be starting soon for Tia and Daxon. They attend American Leadership Academy in Queen Creek, CAN’T WAIT!
