In business, in life, in whatever you do, achieving and sustaining success is difficult
When you reach the top there’s always someone or something trying to knock you down or overtake you.
I was visiting with a friend last night, engaged in his stories of his days playing basketball in college. He had a great NCAA Division One career that began at the Junior College level. His JuCo team was great. They made it all the way to the national championship tournament. He was an amazing point guard with a great shot. He achieved success and reached the top, breaking the record for most three point shots made in a game with 9! What an incredible personal achievement. I’m not sure how long the previous record stood, but now he was the one people would be gunning for. He had the record to beat. That incredible achievement, setting a new record was hard to achieve and was accomplished by all the dedication and hard work he put in for years up to that point. He sat at the top of that throne until the next game of the tournament, where someone else made 13 three point shots. When you get to the top, there will always be others trying to knock you down.
On the path to success you’re going to hit walls and face challenges. This is where many will fall off the path and the crowd gets thinner. As you get past each wall, the weak are eliminated and it’s the achievers who are still going. The more difficult it is, the less competition there will be. But those left to compete against will be the best. The weak have been left behind. The more walls of difficulty along the path, the less that will stick with you and the further you separate yourself from the competition.
Accept the fact and understand that the path to success will be hard. But as you get past those hard things it becomes easier. But know that when you feel the coast is clear, or that you are at the top, there’s more coming that you need to be ready for.
Success is going to require you to do hard things. Start today by doing the hard things first. Climb over that first wall today and keep going. The more you do this, the more you will separate yourself and achieving your success becomes easier.

I recently learned the story of a man, who by all accounts would be considered to be successful. He’s done some amazing things in his life that are nothing short of incredible. As I learned more about his background and his life I became more and more amazed. As I looked at his life, I wondered how he was able to overcome things in his life that would have crushed others. From a very young age, all the way through to his adult years he was faced with unbelievable adversity. Things that no human should have to go through.
This has really had me thinking. Why is it that a boy can go through abuse and punishment every day of his life and still develop into a strong and confident man. While at the same time, someone who has every opportunity in the world handed to them never becomes successful?
As I’ve spent time thinking about this and analyzing different situations, I’ve found a few key characteristics that I believe can help anyone be more successful.
The mind is such a powerful tool for good or bad. Once we can understand and control our mind, our world expands. As we search for ways to be successful in life, we have to start in our mind.
Our first challenge is to recognize that not all physical and mental limitations are real. Too many people believe their own lies or the lies of others. They throw in the towel way too soon.
Develop a Can-Do Attitude
A person with a can-do attitude faces adversity with confidence. They look at it for what it is, a challenge that they have to overcome to get to where they want to be. They are focused on achieving a goal and something that gets in their way isn’t going to stop them.
Mindset matters. Having a can-do attitude is a state of mind. When we expect progress and feel optimistic, challenges can be seen as opportunities and stress can be motivating. When you do get down and discouraged, it’s easier to get back up and find the positive.
Your life is created in your mind before it’s manifested in reality. Whether you have a can-do or can’t-do attitude, you’ll be right.
Start With The First Step
Consistency builds momentum, but it all starts with the first step.
Take the first step in the direction of your goal. When you get knocked down and discouraged and you don’t want to go any further, take the next step. Great success often starts with small beginnings, but you have to start somewhere.
For you, it might mean getting up an hour early to exercise. Maybe it’s making your bed in the morning or reading for 30 minutes a day. Whatever it is, take that first step and do it. But don’t quit. Do it again the next day, and the next, and the next…
Do it until you get to the point that if you don’t do it, your day will be ruined because you missed it. That’s when you’re ready to take the next step.
Become Comfortable Being Uncomfortable
I recently listened to an interview with John Calipari, University of Kentucky basketball coach. He said in order for his players to be the best that they can be, his job as a coach is to make them comfortable being uncomfortable. His job is not to coach them at the level they are at now. His job is to coach them where they need to be and where they are capable of being. This means they will be where they have not been before and they are going to be uncomfortable at times. The situations where they struggle and feel pain, where they are taken to their limits is where they truly learn about themselves and become the best that they can be.
Make them comfortable being uncomfortable.
To reach our goals and be successful, we need to do the same thing. We need to become comfortable being uncomfortable. Step out of your comfort zone on a regular basis. The more often you do it, the stronger you’ll become for when you are faced with adversity.
Hold Yourself Accountable Every Single Day
What is it that you need to do today? What is it that will take you closer to your bigger future? How will you make sure that you do it, no matter what?
Get out of the habit of making excuses for yourself. Holding yourself accountable means you’ll do it, end of story. Don’t allow yourself to have excuses. What we allow becomes acceptable. So as soon as you justify why you didn’t do something, you’ve set a standard and it will be that much easier to justify it again the next time.
Hold yourself accountable and don’t accept excuses!
There are a number of different characteristics and habits that will help you to be successful. But if you can master these four, you’ll be well on your way to an amazing life!

In the talent hotbeds I visited, the chunking takes place in three dimensions. First, the participants look at the task as a whole – as one big chunk, the mega circuit. Second, they divide it into its smallest possible chunks. Third, they play with time, slowing the action down then speeding it up, to learn the inner architecture.
I recently finished going through the One Funnel Away Challenge from Russell Brunson/ClickFunnels. There were a number of things I received as part of this course, which included a book, which I’m currently reading and have to say that I love it! It’s a unique book from Russell, put together by going to his Two Comma Club members and asking them what they would do to get back on top if they lost everything. Here’s what he asked them:
“You suddenly lose all your money, along with your name and reputation, and only have your marketing know-how left. You have bills piled high and people harassing you for money over the phone.
Plus, you have a guaranteed roof over your head, a phone line, an internet connection, and a ClickFunnels account for only one month.
You no longer have your big guru name, your following, or JV partners. Other than your vast marketing experience, you’re an unknown newbie.
What would you do, from day 1 to day 30, to save yourself?”
This book is different than anything I’ve ever read before. It’s a compilation from 30 different individuals who give their day by day plan for 30 days on how they would deal with the situation Russell outlined.
I’ve really enjoyed reading through each chapter as each one is focused on the individuals expertise. Some are coaches, some sell products through e-commerce, some are affiliate marketers and the list goes on.
Today I was reading Stacey and Paul Martino’s chapter. Stacey and Paul are some incredible people and the founders of RelationshipDevelopment.org.
For the past while I have been focused on structuring and organizing our upcoming Mastermind Groups. So there was one section of their chapter that really stood out to me and I loved what Stacey wrote because it ties in so well with our Mastermind Groups.
“When people just do what THEY know, they fail and RETREAT.What do the ones who break through do differently? They seek out The Mentor and The Tribe solution.When I am looking at my goal and I know that it is outside my current comfort zone and I need to break through, I must find a MENTOR who (a) already navigated to that goal successfully for themselves, (b) has a proven process for taking other people to that outcome successfully, and (c) has many success stories of others they helped to get the SAME goal that I want to achieve.And now for The Tribe – people who BREAK THROUGH to new levels, surround themselves with a tribe of people who are on the same journey, going to the same goal or beyond. These are the people who will catch me when I stumble and celebrate with me when I am victorious. I must surround myself with The Mentor who has the solutions and The Tribe that will support me.”

I spent hours thinking, jotting notes down, researching but I had nothing. My company was still fairly new in our industry but we had been in operation for a while. Long enough that a lot of the start-up kinks were figured out. But now I was faced with a new problem. It was a situation I had never had to deal with before in this company or any of the other companies I had been involved in previously. But the toughest part was that I just couldn’t figure out a solution that I was happy with. Sure, I was coming up with a lot of different ideas and plans, but the more I thought about them, the more I realized they were not the answer.
One evening I was at an event that a number of other entrepreneurs there that I knew. A few of us ended up sitting at a table together and once the evening wrapped up we all stayed and spent some time talking about each others businesses, successes, failures and challenges. During our conversations I brought up the issue that I was dealing with and it just so happened that one of the ladies at the table had dealt successfully with a very similar situation in her company. After she told us what she did, we all discussed it more until we figured out the best way it would work for me.
This was when I discovered first hand, the power of a Mastermind Group.
The first time that I had heard the concept of a Mastermind Group was from Napoleon Hill. In his book, Think and Grow Rich, Hill described the Mastermind principle as, “The coordination of knowledge and effort between two or more people who work towards a definite purpose in a spirit of harmony… no two minds ever come together without thereby creating a third, invisible intangible force which may be likened to a third mind,” also known as the Mastermind.
It’s incredible what can happen when you bring people together to solve a problem or make a plan. When you combine the power of a number of different personalities, perspectives, experiences and knowledge a lot can be accomplished or discovered. Jim Rohn once said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” Who you spend your time with influences the person that you will eventually become. This includes every area of your life from wealth, to health, to styles and more. Take a look at yourself. Who are the people you spend the most time with? Now take a look at your similarities. Interesting isn’t it? Are you spending time with the people that will help you grow and take your business to the next level?
